By S. E. Boss, Force Master Chief, Bureau of Medicine And Surgery
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I wish the men and women of the Hospital Corps a very happy 114th birthday. History has witnessed our humble beginnings, from our 1898 establishment, through our first graduating class of 28, and today, a force of over 25,000 performing duties around the globe.
Hospital Corpsmen represents the best men and women our Nation has to offer. To be a Hospital Corpsman is to be a member of America’s finest – to be one of the few who steps forward with Honor, Courage and Commitment to face whatever dangers await.
I am extremely proud, honored, and privileged to lead and serve the finest Sailors in the Navy. Your success and relentless commitment today will continue to provide the foundation for future success as the Hospital Corps transforms to meet the ever-changing missions and needs of the Navy.
As you celebrate June 17 and reflect upon our rich traditions and meritorious decorations, we must pause to reflect and pay tribute to those Corpsmen who have given the last full measure in defense of freedom. We extend our deepest gratitude to our Hospital Corpsmen families – the unsung heroes who endure hardship and sacrifice so that we are able to push forward and accomplish the Navy and Marine Corps mission. We celebrate the magnificent men and women who willingly and selflessly continue to go into harm’s way to protect this great Nation.
To all who have gone before, to those who wear the clothe of our Nation and to the families that give us the strength to forge ahead.
– I wish you all a Happy 114th Birthday!!
